2008 CA Annual Conference

Thursday 27th March - Sunday 30th March, University of Liverpool

From 27 to 30 March 2008, the University of Liverpool is hosting the Classical Association annual conference. 2008 is also the year that Liverpool is European Capital of Culture, making the city an exciting destination for visitors, old and new. Around 2 million people from around the globe are expected to join the year-long celebrations, enjoying world-class festivals of music, dance, theatre, and art alongside the city’s long-standing attractions: the UNESCO world-heritage waterfront, the Tate and Williamson galleries of contemporary and pre-Raphaelite art, and the excellent National Museums Liverpool.

In keeping with one of the themes of Liverpool 2008, The World in One City, the conference will bring together scholars from diverse countries and traditions to share their research on an international stage and bring a classical component to the cultural proceedings. With speakers arriving from every continent except Antarctica to discuss their research on the Classical world, it promises to be a vibrant event. 2008 is an exciting time to be in Liverpool. During its Capital of Culture year, the city will be filled with events and exhibitions, which we very much hope delegates will be able to enjoy during their visit. For further details see the conference website or the conference booklet.

For details of the AGM which will be held at the conference, please see here.

Student Conference Bursaries 2008

1. The Scheme
As in previous years the CA is offering a limited number of bursaries to students wishing to attend the CA Conference, held this year at the University of Liverpool on 27-30 March (programme enclosed). Kindly note that the awards are open to PGCE, graduate and undergraduate students in all years, whether full-time or part-time. The CA is particularly receptive to applications from PGCE students, but otherwise has no preferences as between different categories. Funding is available for up to the equivalent of 60 full bursaries in all, including both this scheme and that for school teachers (advertised separately).

2. Full and Part Bursaries
The value of a full bursary on this occasion is £252, i.e. the cost of the Conference Fee, all meals, including the Conference Dinner, and accommodation (based on standard accommodation). Half bursaries of £126 are also available. Colleagues are invited to submit the names of up to three FTE bursars in any combination of full and half (i.e. the maximum number of nominees is 6 x half bursaries). Please note that we cannot consider any proportions other than full or half bursaries and that we cannot accept more than six nominations from any one department. All nominations must be on the form, which has been sent to your department and may also be downloaded from here.

3. Applications
Please complete the application form and return it to the address below by post or by e-mail attachment not later than 31 January. You will be informed of the outcome of the competition by 15 February.
